Notes from etalon run

----

2015Jun23 (calendar)

Beam 6 was giving us problems.. A highly comatic image. we adjusted the pickoff tip/tilt and the z-position to optimize the flux (increase x2)
We now have an excellent image FWHM 7.1 and no coma, although fluxes are still low by x2 compared to best other ones... not sure why.

luminous mounts 6: x,y,z and ealing 56320, 98990, 89053, 60000
compared to original position: 61060, 60750,89153, 87750.

we expect teh RETRO fringes to now be in a different place compared to last time and yesterday.

now we will move to the grism mode.

so we setup camera based on last run:
So we had to the 'flip quadrant function.' setup was: 48 252 100 2 4 500 500 which gave frame times of 13ms (Ok)

next we move prism out of the way -- from 505213 -> 0

next talking to filterwheels. turn on mirc and champ filterwheel power from APC webpages.

run script: wolverine2:Subversion/MIRC/MIRC6T/scripts/filterwheel.sh (be patient. this takes a while)

SET ConfigName to H_GRISM150
etalon 6,30,0,18,24,12 micron

RETRO POSITIONS: B12, B23, B34, B45, B56 (with W1 B5, W2 B6)
5.345, 6.840, 5.243, 6.185, 9.905

ok.. light was perfectly centered in the above software window.

XCHANS shifted: PRISM: 201 213 219 164 188 176
NOW for R150, quad flip: 199 211 217 162 186 174
onsky: 198 211 217 161
RETRO for B5B6 is now 9.9049 (instead of 7.715mm because we shifted the B6 ealing mount by 2.7mm)
Now taking fringe data on all pairs, both w/ and w/o etalon.
remember to turn tiptilt on for spooler.

taking internal fringe data w/ and w/o etalons.

all done.. we took an extra few hours to do this because the visbeams alignment was poor. we re-optimized that tonight too.

Trying to get on sky. 2am. issues with fiber explorer not receiving proper xchans. after trying many things, we are rebooting mirkwood to see if this might free up a socket problem?

now problem with S1. can't track above 78 degrees! ugh!

We got a decent set on kap peg, although we often tracked when we didn't have the main packet.

----
2015Jun24 (calendar)

I noticd the PRISM had not fully retracted for last night's data. This means the wavelength calibration might be different than what we find today.
I also noticed the xchans are a bit low on the chip (not perfectly aligned with fringes). I will tweak this up tomorrow, but not touch the fringe positions.

First half of night is Nic's to use S1S2, so we are doing a bit of 4T data on v819 Her.

I calculated the separatino of Kappa Peg and we have seo 183.24650 mas and 100.11146 deg

v819 her (H 3.8) is a bit faint. we can sometimes see the fringes.

we are collecting great data!!

good setting during average seeing 8.5cm: coherent coadds 30, ps coadd 3.

we keep losing stars near zenith hole. remember to take shutters for gam lyr BEFORE 1:30am.

crap! we see that we lost communcation with tiptilt so that means the header have the same star for everything! ugh. We better keep the logs precious.

we got data on v819 Her, gam Lyr (no shutters), sig cyg, then kap peg.

----
2015 Jun 25 (calendar, Thursday)

we blew air on beam 6 fiber and the flux went up by x3. yay! we also tweaked the XCHAN fibers up on the array to be more perfectly aligned with the fringe channels.

JDM added 'BEAMCOMB' to the spooler output, as Theo requested. code currently in /home/devel/control/MIRC/spooler(bin)
I tried recombling the cvs code by tons of errors and so dropped it.

We don't have implemented our precision thermometers but I will record the temperature readings on the lab thermometers. These are readings from the white "Radio Shack digital thermometer" that is sitting on the optical bench right next to the etalon mounts. OUTDOOR: 72.3 F, INDOOR 73.9 F. (I thoughtI recorded this temperature also last year, but can't find it yet..)

crap! we see that we lost communcation with tiptilt so that means the header have the same star for everything! ugh. We better keep the logs precious.

we got data on v819 Her, gam Lyr (no shutters), sig cyg, then kap peg.

(From X Che 2015Jun)

----

If we really need a full alignment, here is what I think we should do without taking apart the pieces.

1. check the alignment of single-mode fiber and its lenslet array. Put the laser on beam 3 and 4, maximize the throughput, and visually check
the images behind the beamsplitter. If the two images are pretty much Gaussian, and they are vertically aligned, then this alignment is good.

2. If step1 is good, then the angle misalignment must happen in multimode fiber and its lenslet array. This can also be confirmed if the intensity
of beam 3 and 4 don't go the same direction when tiptilting the stage. The goniometer that holds the multimode fiber should be able to fix it.
By observing the intensity change on beam 3 and 4 when tilting the stage in one direction, we can pretty much guess which direction we should
change the goniometer.

3. one last thing is that the output of the multimode fibers may be blocked, have you tried to tiptilt the platform of the triangular mirror?

Hope that helps.

So we had to the 'flip quadrant function.' setup was: 48 252 100 2 4 500 500 which gave frame times of 13ms (Ok)

next we move prism out of the way -- from 505213 -> 0

next talking to filterwheels. turn on mirc and champ filterwheel power from APC webpages.

run script: wolverine2:Subversion/MIRC/MIRC6T/scripts/filterwheel.sh (be patient. this takes a while)

etalon 6,30,0,18,24,12 micron

RETRO POSITIONS: B12, B23, B34, B45, B56 (with W1 B5, W2 B6)
5.345, 6.840, 5.243, 6.185, 9.905

ok.. light was perfectly centered in the above software window.

XCHANS shifted: PRISM: 201 213 219 164 188 176
NOW for R150, quad flip: 199 211 217 162 186 174

RETRO for B5B6 is now 9.9049 (instead of 7.715mm because we shifted the B6 ealing mount by 2.7mm)
Now taking fringe data on all pairs, both w/ and w/o etalon.
remember to turn tiptilt on for spooler.

taking internal fringe data w/ and w/o etalons.

John Goals:

John Alignment Notes:

Lab AO
--------
* Align green laser as normal including down the rails
* using flat before DM, auto-retro the light back toward WFS
* memorize flat
* check green laser bouncing off the back of dicroic. save offsets.
* put flat on rails and send light back. tweak blue spots into position on WFS. Blue light too weak normally but use coadd mode (if its ready) or maybe white light (TBD)
* close servo loop. set flat a few times. Save flat. .this is now the good DM position.
Note if DM voltages are not in optimal range 0.6-0.7 V, then adjust either tiptilt of DM stage itself or figure out what is out of focus. you can check with 2 hole mask before and after the delay line cart to try to determine what needs adjustment.
* Now bring laser beacon into lab from telescope (first send to Tel-WFS then send to lab using dicroic).
* focus beacon using lab WFS by moving fiber at telescope.
*check for consistency with 2-hole mask that the tel beacon is collimated.

----

Instruction from Theo about how to run Tiptilt from the telWFS

If you wish to play with the WFS as tiptilt, the command "twfs" on the telescope server will toggle between listening to the old tiptilt and the new WFS for the tiptilt signal. On the WFS gui the "REOPEN TT SOCKET" should establish a conneciton. There are places to play with the gain and damping (who knows if the sign, or even X Vs Y are correct....). The TT DISP is much like the one for the old tiptilt. If you change the gain or damping you need tohit the "SEND SERVO" button. the "SCOPE DISPLAY" is like the one on the LABAO, although I don't htink it does focus etc yet. I need to add all that stuff.

use SEND button to change state and test servo offsets.

Notes from 2015Jun11.. Gain settings of tel wfs : X -0.020, -0.02 (+0.005, Y -0.005)

Fri June 12 2015

AO Testing:

Closed loop (of telescope wfs with tip/tilt) of a bright star Vega [On sky woohoo].
VEGA az,el: +65,+76

Saving WFS data from both wfss under various settings.

I'm calling the wfs at the telescope TWFS!

Both wfs cameras set to 200Hz. (Typically runs 194 - 206 Hz)

Loaded Def to DM in lab. Use 'Scope' to align on Lab WFS.

Saving 10,000 on LabAO.
Saving 10,000 on TWFS. -> no indicator that data is being saved on TWFS. Have to check for files...

Everything is frozen on the lab side.... too many frames? out of memory?? oops.

10,000 is too many. Had to restart LabAO server.

Retrying with 200 frames:
Saving 200 frames on LabAO -> looks like it is saving data.
Saving 200 frames on TWFS -> looks like its doing something...maybe.

Saving 100 frames on TWFS
Saving 200 frames on LabAO

File number 6 for both TWFS & LabAO. TWFS: 200 Hz CLOSED loop with TT. LabAO OPEN loop with default flat.
Hangs on 1000 frames, hopefully just freezes when saved

File 7: same as 6.
File 8: same as 6.

File number 9 for both TWFS & LabAO. TWFS: 200 Hz CLOSED loop with TT. LabAO CLOSED loop with default flat.
Files 10 & 11 same as file 9. File 11 may have lost range on TT.

Taking 3 additional sets: 12, 13, & 14. Same as 9, 10, & 11.

Open all loops!!!!!

Some motion tests.
Collecting data as it drifts. All loops open.
File 15, 16, 17, & 18

Looks like the beacon was on through those tests.

file 21. moved the telescope and saved while moving.
file 22. same test, opposite direction on the same axis.

at the end of the dataset1, the az/el was +65,+76.
-------------

going to new star Alp CRB (at 1:30am)
az,el +264,60.

took some test files.

taking simultaneous data with default lab ao dm with tiptilt closed on telAO.
#25,26,27
(note theres is a big time dealy between when we lose light in tel WFS and lose light in labAO -- artifact? latency?)

looking at beacons for reference.
28,29,30 (note tel WFS is a bit saturated)

closing loop on will repeat with star light using static-correct wavefront,
will run lab WFS for beacon at 50 Hz for higher snr
31,32,33
beacon: 34 (same exact settings). missing many spots../
beacon: 35 (using default DM)
(i expect to see some problems compared ot last one sincce I'm not suing the default DM)

next: I will use servo on beacon. SET FLAT
go back to star and take some data as parallactic angle changes.
beam seems to be vignetting on lab ao. could be due star out of focus (tel wfs say s focus -1.4)
** need s2 secondary mirror motors working !! *
36, 37,38,39
current az,el: 271, 51.

Some things we need:
*1) TT needs to off load to telescope tracking when out of range.
*2) we need focus tiptilt, etc to be the same SCALE and meaning on LABAO and TELWFS. I might be running wrong version??
*3) need way to tweak beacon on reference offsets on camera (?) similar to LAB, SCOPE button?
*4) labaogtk crashed many times. more often i think when saving data.
*5) terms seem affected by subapertures with low flux. how can we auotmatically set up the clamping?
*6) how to do co-adding on labao camera?
*7) when in closed loop, we should have some way to know how much defcous/astigmatism is 'tuned in"
*8) we sholdn't need to repeatedly click on 'set flat' when closing loop on labao
*9) labao rate was super slow (1 Hz) when overlaying boxes from wazoo.
*10) should we put in a safety loop so emccd can't cool down too fast and cause damage? are we supposed to keep on?
*11) create a safety shutter cutoff on the emccd at the telescope to protect detector
*12) save telemetry data for both wFS (time stamped zernike terms, estiamte of seeing, etc)
*13) set defaults in all the motion guis and cameras, etc.
----

Fri June 12 to Sun Jun14.

Mike Ireland and JDM tried to focus S2 and an actuator went nuts. ugh. After some stress, Mike and company figured out way to work with it over the next FEW days. The upshot is that the system works fine with short cables not long cables. Theo rigged up a system with short cables and we will try to use this sytem to recovery focus for monday jun 15.

Mon June 15

Goals:
*1) Recovery position and focus S2. (main goal)
*2) Resolve issues above.
*3) JDM work on the wavefront test data
*4) Send TT signal from lab WFS to tel WFS and use it!
*5) Send higher order terms from tel WFS to lab WFS.

Tue June 16

Calibrating transfer matrices

took wavefront sensor data in UT 2015 Jun 17 file.

formula:
x(TELWFS) = x(LABWFS) * cos( theta) + y(LABWFS)*sin(theta)
y(TELWFS) = x(LABWFS) * sin(theta) - y(LABWFS)*cos(theta)

Lab AO
* using flat before DM, auto-retro the light back toward WFS
* memorize flat

Had to restart LabAO server.
looking at beacons for reference.
next: I will use servo on beacon. SET FLAT
go back to star and take some data as parallactic angle changes.
beam seems to be vignetting on lab ao. could be due star out of focus (tel wfs say s focus -1.4)
** need s2 secondary mirror motors working !! *
current az,el: 271, 51.

Lab AO
--------
* Align green laser as normal including down the rails
* using flat before DM, auto-retro the light back toward WFS
* memorize flat
*check for consistency with 2-hole mask that the tel beacon is collimated.
at the end of the dataset1, the az/el was +65,+76.

1) TT needs to off load to telescope tracking when out of range.
2) we need focus tiptilt, etc to be the same SCALE and meaning on LABAO and TELWFS. I might be running wrong version??
3) need way to tweak beacon on reference offsets on camera (?) similar to LAB, SCOPE button?
4) labaogtk crashed many times. more often i think when saving data.
5) terms seem affected by subapertures with low flux. how can we auotmatically set up the clamping?
6) how to do co-adding on labao camera?
7) when in closed loop, we should have some way to know how much defcous/astigmatism is 'tuned in"
8) we sholdn't need to repeatedly click on 'set flat' when closing loop on labao
9) labao rate was super slow (1 Hz) when overlaying boxes from wazoo.
10) should we put in a safety loop so emccd can't cool down too fast and cause damage? are we supposed to keep on?
Lab AO
--------
* Align green laser as normal including down the rails
* using flat before DM, auto-retro the light back toward WFS
* memorize flat

This CHARA run is for installing and testing the Etalon.

by John Monnier

I arrived on 2014Jun07 with the hardware. I discovered a small clearance issue -- the edge of the mount clipped V6. see image below

Laszlo kindly trimmed off the extra hardware and moved the mounting points over 3 inches. Now it is fine.

Keith Johnson joined me on Jun 11 (I had a Jun 9 keck run to attend to). We did a number of tests and discovered the chara beams were heading down at about 0.5 degree angle -- we had shim the mount to account for this so that the etalons were near-normal. All of the etalons are normal to beam within about 18" or so -- usually better. We measured by putting in a target with hole and looking for the spot upon reflection on a target. We used steel shims from Laszlo.

We did some tests in the lab to confirm that the system was working as expected. on UT2014Jun15 we aligned MIRC with the PRISM and used B1B2 with etalons 2.000 <-> 2.006 (see engineering logs) and the data seemed to show good correspondence with expectations. We also tried 2.000 <-> 2.012 for B1 and B2, but we did not have adequate spectral resolution to see the phase modulation.

Next on 2014Jun16 we aligned using the R150 GRISM. there was a clearance issue and so couldn't simply 'move' the spectrum into the correct quadrant. So we had to the 'flip quadrant function.' Our final setup was: 48 252 100 2 4 500 500 which gave frame times of 13ms (Ok).
We repeated the same experiment as previous day using a dx=6mu and dx=12mu etalon along with calibrations. For fun we also found the secondary fringe packets -- by tuning the retro by 2mm X 1.46 we found fringes with extra dispersion .. also for 4mm X 1.46

I analyzed the 2014Jun16 data carefully and found good correspondence with theory.. see:

Next we came up with an observing strategy for the run.

----
mu boo (cal: gam her). mu boo was a target in PHASES with no astrometric motion. Good test target.
----
v819 Her (cal: gam lyr). v819 her is a perfect test target from Mutterspaugh thesis. bright, up in june, 100mu-as motion with 4.4 day period, separation <~100mas.
----
kap peg (cal: sig Cyg). kap peg is another great test from MUtterspaugh thesis. separation is larger 100-250mas (150mas for our current run). astrometric mtion of B is 1.0 mas motion over 6 day period.
----

note that S1 is out of service with broken drive gear but we can use the others.

Beam order is W1-S2-S1-E1-E2-W2 (standard mirc beam order)

Original Plan
----
mu boo. 8:30-9:30. POPs 31524 (all pops are ordered S2W1W2E1E2).

gam her . 9:30-10:15

gam her + etalon. 10:15-10:30
----
v819 her. 10:30-12 POPs 21523.

gam lyr. 12:00-12:45.

gam lyr + etalon. 12:45-1:00

v819 her 1:00-2:30; (POP change 23513)
----
kap peg. 2:30-3:30 (POPs 21523)

sig cyg. 3:30-4:15. (POPs 22513)

sig cyg+ etalon. 4:15-4:30.

kap peg. 4:30-5:30.
-----
sunrise

on 2102Jun15 we got our first fringes on sky and realized that our sensitivity was tough under seeing conditions of r0<15cm. We could detect all fringes for Kap Peg and v819 Her and gam lyr. However we could not track Gam Lyr with etalon in... we took data with etalon by taking advantage of the low piston and good baseline model. We would setup the fringes w/o etalon. then quickly remove etalon and take 30 files. we would then remove etalon, zero out the fringes, and repeat. We were able to take >100 files this way we hope can be used.

Because of the lower sensitivity we decided to explore the use of lab measurements to calibrate the wavelength. Each day starting on 2012Jul15 morning and the next 3, we took fringe data using white light source on all the neighboring pairs (b12,b23,b34,b45,b56), both w and w/o etalon including full shutter sets.

we decided to start each night with the full set of fringe data and in the morning afte robserving to just to 2 of them as a check for drifts (B12, B45).

Note after first night (2014Jun15) we changed etalon order from 0,6,12,18,24,30 micron to 6,30,0,18,24,12 micron. This former order was not optimal because all the alb fringes had the same delta etalon thickness of just 6 microns. In order to better sample the range of etalon thickness during lab measurements, we changed order to 6,30,0,18,24,12 micron which is the only solution that has each neighboring beam with a different thickness and also that maintains beams the etalons in beam4,5 (18,24 mu) to allow comparison with the data from 2014Jun15.

From 2014Jun16,17 we used the latter etalon setting.

We also updated our plan for the last 2 nights to remove mu boo and all cals except gam lyr. we adjusted POPs a bit to otimize time.

NewPlan
----
white light lab fringes on all pairs, w/ and w/o etalon
----
v819 her. 9:40-12:30 POPs 21523.

gam lyr. 12:45-01:2-. NO etalon

gam lyr + etalon. 01:20 to 2:00.

----
kap peg. 2:30-5:15 (POPs 32523) (at beginning of this and end we lose a telescope).
----
white light lab fringes on B12,B45 (w, and w/o etalon)

sunrise

----

oh one more thing. before the last night UT2014Jun16, we purposefully changed the spectrograph alignment moving the imaging doublet lens. Then re-optimizing by hand. I hope/expect to see eidence of a wavelength shift in all different beam pair analysis based on the etalon white light lab data we took that night before observing.

Now one odd thing I noticed taking data, especially on Kappa Peg on last night. The MIRC GDT would, for some baselines, track on the weaker fringe packet of the wide binary. This is because the separation is so big taht is it bigger than the OPD capture range on the mirc GDT. I could see this because there would be one weak fringe with E1 (for instance), and then if I clicked over like 50 microns, all of sudden BOOM we'd get all th eother fringes very bright..This could be a serious systematic and need some thought how to deal with it.

oh one more thing. before the last night UT2014Jun16, we purposefully changed the spectrograph alignment moving the imaging doublet lens. Then re-optimizing by hand. I hope/expect to see eidence of a wavelength shift in all different beam pair analysis based on the etalon white light lab data we took that night before observing.

I analyzed the 2014Jun16 data carefully and found good correspondence with theory.. see:

Next we came up with an observing strategy for the run.

mu boo (cal: gam her). mu boo was a target in PHASES with no astrometric motion.

Beam order is W1-S2-S1-E1-E2-W2 (standard mirc beam order)

sig cyg.
